There must be a jinx against Central High School’s football team when they go to Cottage Grove.

Friday night they had a heartbreaking loss to Cottage Grove in the state quarterfinals.

In 2011, they lost to a tough Siuslaw team in the semifinals of the 4A state playoffs.

And in 2011, running back Tell Cruickshank, then playing for Perrydale, lost to Camas Valley in the 1A state championship game at the field.

It hasn’t been a great place for Central to play.

“We don’t like this place,” Central quarterback Ben Finnegan said. “We didn’t want it to end here, too.”
About the only good thing that’s happened to anyone involved with Central at Cottage Grove is that Central assistant Joel Magill won the 2A state championship game as head coach of Amity at the field in 2003.
